about

Gloomy Planets is Callum Kirkpatrick, named after a line in a Johnny Foreigner track. Most of his material is quite subtle lofi garage stuff, there's elements of spoken word and experimental pop. The recordings are made with pretty low-grade technology, but it's used to its advantage and turned into an instrument (or effect) in itself. The combination of muddy compression, reverb and distortion, coupled with Cal's often inaudible vocals make for an interesting sound, like how The Jesus & Mary Chain worked the fuzz on Psychocandy to their own advantage and definition. That's the second TJ&M reference.

A lot of the work is very much inspired by American indie pop but is delivered often in an acoustic setting.

The reason why I chose this cover of a Modern Baseball song over all others is simply the intention in it's creation. Gloomy Planets is largely a project centred around isolation, yet it is recorded at a house party between Cal and some friends. It gives a nice contrast to his own material, but is still recognisably his cover, despite the others. The playful and laid back nature of the recording denotes a nice, youthful and momental atmosphere which gives it a good sense of friendship and harmony.

Plus, it felt appropriate to redefine the existence of Modern Baseball out of the hands of bandwagon hopping moronic pop punk children, to show it is enjoyed and celebrated by people and musicians who have more to show for themselves than a Supreme cap.
