about

BPH is the alias of musician Matt Whitley. He used to be in a band called Loser Year, which is how I found him and then discovered that for all the tracks LY had, Matt had about double in solo material. The project varies to his preference, but it definitely takes a lot if influence from surf pop simplicity and buoyancy, at some points leaning towards shoegaze inspired indie pop like The Jesus & Mary Chain or The Cure, but still maintaining a punk drive in most places.

I chose this track specifically for its ability to remain catchy and effective, despite simplicity. Also, the lyrical content is refreshingly honest and blunt and is a good moniker for the experience of being in high school and all the annoyances and social bullshit one has to deal with. It does feel like it should have been some kind of theme song for Freaks & Geeks, essentially. But maybe that would have been too obvious.
